Waste Education

Introduction

Waste Education is a key part of the Regional Council's efforts to reduce waste and increase resource recovery in the region. The SEMRC employs a full-time Regional Waste Education Officer who is available to work with schools, the member councils, local businesses and community groups to encourage and educate the community about waste reduction.

Facts & Figures

In 2004, the region's population disposed of OVER 92,000 tonnes of waste. And that just came from the 73,000 households in the region.

One tonne of waste roughly equals one cubic metre of space in a land fill site. So every year the region uses about 72,000 cubic metres of land fill space. This is enough to cover Subiaco Oval in three metres of rubbish every year.

The Regional Waste Education Program aims to reduce this by at least 7% in the next two years. It will do this through promoting reduction and reuse strategies and improving community understanding of what can be recycled.

This will operate hand in hand with the Rregional Council's research into resource recovery within the region. (See Future Planning for more information)

The Three R's

The Waste Education Program encourages people to consider the three R's of waste minimisation:

  • Reuse; and
  • Recycling
